About the Day

12 October, Dia de la Hispanidad, celebrates the Virgin of El Pilar and the “discovery” of America. Christopher Columbus is supposed to have set sail from the port of Palos de la Frontera in South-West Spain on 03 August 1492. He landed on an island that is now part of the Bahamas in the Caribbean on 12 October 1492. This day is celebrated as the annual national public holiday known as National Spanish Day: Día de la Hispanidad or Fiesta Nacional de España.

What do you miss most about home?

The truth is that I have only been away from home for a month and I still have not had time to miss anything. Both my family and I are really enjoying these first few weeks of adventure, so you might ask me this question in a couple of years’ time, at least.

What do you find rewarding about working in a multinational environment like JALLC?

This is the third time I have worked in an international environment, the first two times were for six-month periods, one in NATO and the other in the EU. I have always found it to be a great opportunity to grow, both professionally and personally, as it allows you to get to know other cultures, other points of view and other ways of doing things, which is always enriching. Above all, it presents an opportunity to make friends that stay with you forever.

What is something unique in Portugal that others may not know?

Many things make Portugal an attractive country. Above all, I would highlight the Portuguese people who are very welcoming and friendly, the quality of the sunlight here, which makes everything look beautiful, the weather, and the food.

How do you usually celebrate this national day (in Portugal or in your country)?

Traditionally, this day is a holiday in my country, and I spend it quietly with my family and friends. Although there have been several years, first as a midshipman and then as a divisional officer of the Spanish Naval Academy commanding one of the cadet companies, when I have had the privilege and honour of participating in the parade of the Armed Forces presided over by His Majesty the King of Spain.
