About the Day

The National Day of Romania is celebrated on 01st of December to commemorate the unification of all Romanian territories in 1918, also known as the Great Union. This holiday with a deep signification for all Romanian citizens was established after the Romanian Revolution of 1989. Currently the events on or around this day includes but are not restricted to cultural events, military parades and all other open events to celebrate it.

What do you miss most about home?

We love Portugal for the people, landscape and cuisine, but in terms of things from home I can say that we miss the snow in the winter, and maybe some winter dishes that, without the coldness of the Romanian winters, are not needed here!

What do you find rewarding about working in a multinational environment like JALLC?

The multiculturalism of JALLC and the fact that you can see smiling people all week long is speaking for the working environment—even if the nature of some of the tasks and projects might lead to some migraines!  On the other hand, there is a lot of knowledge here and so many opportunities to develop yourself—either by getting involved in the latest research or by participating in projects that are, again, wonderful sources for accumulating knowledge and exploring different views.

What is something unique in Portugal that others may not know?

First of all, the wonderful architecture, as it carries the stories of many centuries.  The cuisine is not complicated, but straightforward and delicious, and of course we can’t forget the welcoming people, who make everything here easier. One particular thing is that, as we are coming from the shores of the Black Sea, for summer holidays, the Portuguese ocean is not warm enough for swimming! However, the air temperature is wonderful for the whole year—mild in winter and not so hot in summer.

How do you usually celebrate this national day (in Portugal or in your country)?

The Romanian National Day is widely celebrated throughout the country with festive events and activities. During this day, special documentaries and films are shown on TV, and there are military parades, music, dance, and speeches in town squares around the country.

Usually there is a military parade in the capital to also include representatives from other countries that are stationed in Romania, which I also participated in some years ago.
