From 06 to 08 June, the JALLC’s Advisory and Training Team (JATT) provided Lessons Learned (LL) training to the Irish Defence Forces (Óglaigh na hÉireann) at Irish Defence Forces HQ, McKee Barracks, in Dublin, Ireland.

The training encompassed a diverse range of topics, designed to bolster the Irish Defence Forces' understanding and proficiency in utilizing the NATO LL Capability and Process. The 19 participants (LL Points of Contact and LL Staff Officers) were introduced to the NATO LL Portal (NLLP), familiarizing them with its functions and features. Additionally, the course covered the format, collection, and processing of observations, while highlighting the significance of analysis techniques to support the NATO LL Process. Furthermore, participants gained insights into the application of NATO LL during military exercises, enhancing their ability to draw relevant lessons from simulated scenarios.

A key aspect of the training involved syndicate work, where participants collaborated in smaller groups for analysis. This approach facilitated comprehensive discussions and further engagement with the subject matter, culminating in a final presentation in the plenary session.IMG-20230621-WA0013.jpg

Despite having its own National LL Portal, the Irish Defence Forces acknowledged the value of being NLLP sharing users. The NLLP, managed by the JALLC, serves as NATO's centralized hub for all Lessons Learned information. It allows the submission of Observations, Lessons, and Lessons Learned-related documents from across NATO and Partner Nations, fostering collective learning and improvement.

Recognizing the importance of this training, Major Marc Lennon, the Deputy Head of Training Evaluation and LL at the Irish Forces HQ Defence, highlighted its timeliness, coinciding with the Irish Defence Forces' ongoing efforts to revise their LL system. Emphasizing the pivotal role of the LL capability as an enabler to the force's mission, the Deputy Head underscored the significance of honing LL skills.

The JATT's training session proved to be an invaluable opportunity for the Irish Defence Forces to enhance their understanding and application of the NATO's Lessons Learned Capability and Process. By actively engaging with practical exercises and real examples, the participants have acquired the necessary tools to further bolster their LL capability and contribute to the force's overall effectiveness in fulfilling its mission.
