The long awaited 2025 edition of the JALLC’s Annual Magazine, The Explorer, is finally out; and it doesn’t disappoint. Packed with topical articles revolving around the central theme of How Lessons are shaping the Future, this edition includes feature articles on Future Warfare, for example the articles on the Future Operating Environment, Multi-Domain Operations, and Drone Warfare.

In the latter article, we take a look at what lessons have and can already be learned from the latest innovations in drone use from Russia’s war against Ukraine. Innovations in the Air, Maritime, and Land Domains are presented in this article which is a must read for those invested in NATO’s future in the context of Drone warfare.
Another highlight is the article “Brothers in Arms” which explains the JALLC-JATEC relationship: past-present-and future. Both Commanders (JALLC and JATEC) present the history of Lessons Learned from Russia’s war against Ukraine and how the JALLC and the JATEC are different in what they do but also offer the “best of both worlds” when it comes to supporting NATOs—and Ukraine’s—Lessons Learned efforts.
The Key Feature article in this edition is “NATO’s North Star” and looks at the NATO Warfighting Capstone Concept (NWCC), how it works with NATO’s Concept for the Deterrence and Defence of the Euro-Atlantic Area (DDA) and what both concepts mean for Lessons Learned now and in the future. The article was developed from interviews with Dr Kęstutis Paulauskas, one of the lead authors of the NWCC at HQ Supreme Allied Command Transformation, and Mr Jay Janzen, Director of the Communications Division at SHAPE, who was able to provide the DDA perspective to the article.
Finally, this edition of The Explorer covers the recent change of command and offers readers a chance to get know COM JALLC a little better in the article following an in-depth interview with the Brigadier General.
In short, it’s another packed edition of this well-respected publication by the Lessons Learned Community, for the Lessons Learned Community.
