On 20 April 2021, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (SACT), General André Lanata, visited the JALLC to discuss the HQ’s contribution to Alliance objectives, to award two commendations to JALLC staff for their outstanding service, and to say farewell to the JALLC and its staff.  General Lanata was confirmed by the North Atlantic Council to his post as SACT in June 2018. After a three-year tour of duty, he will be succeeded this year in the change of command ceremony planned in September at HQ SACT in Norfolk, Virginia, USA.

After arriving at the JALLC, SACT first had an office call with the JALLC’s Commander to discuss the HQ, its activities, and its contribution to Alliance objectives. For example, the JALLC’s analysis teams have produced a number of NATO Lessons Learned Portal (NLLP) Active Content Management (ACM) and Short Term Analysis products on NATO’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic which include routine and topic-specific reports on COVID-19 and a COVID-19 interactive dashboard and storyboard which allow users to interact with COVID-19 NLLP data.

The JALLC is also currently working on several projects including a study on Building Integrity in Operations which aims to examine the implementation of Building Integrity, Anti- and Counter- corruption measures introduced in NATO Missions & Operations.  The study will advise SHAPE on how to revise relevant guidance and activities such as handbooks, training, and action plans.  The study is planned to be finished in the second-half of 2021.

The JALLC is also working on a study covering Lessons Learned from the Resolute Support Mission (RSM) in Afghanistan which will analyse NATO’s experience in planning, conducting and assessing the mission in order to derive strategic and operational lessons and provide recommendations for current and future Allied Train, Advise and Assist activities, and capacity building operations and missions. The project will also address the interaction with the other two strands of NATO’s engagement in Afghanistan: the Afghan National Army Trust Fund and the Enduring Partnership strands. The study is due to be completed at the end of 2021. You can find out more about NATO in Afghanistan here.

General Lanata also took the opportunity of this short visit to address the JALLC’s staff. He spoke about the good work the JALLC has done and how Lessons Learned is fundamental to the transformation of the Alliance.  After his address, he awarded commendations to two members of the JALLC’s IT branch for their outstanding services.
