This year holds particular significance as we commemorate two crucial milestones in the global movement for gender equality: the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the 25th anniversary of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security. These milestones are a powerful reminder of the progress we’ve made while underscoring the ongoing work that remains.

This year’s theme for International Women’s Day, “For ALL women and girls: Rights, Equality, and Empowerment,” speaks to the core of our shared mission at NATO and the JALLC. NATO's commitment to equality ensures that all personnel, regardless of gender, can advance based on merit. As the Commander of the JALLC stated, we are fortunate to live and work in an environment where women and men enjoy the same opportunities, benefits, and recognition.

Empowering women is not just about making equal opportunities available; it is about creating an environment where all individuals are encouraged to reach their full potential. The JALLC stands as a model of diversity and inclusivity. The organization's commitment to gender equality goes beyond policy—it is reflected in our daily operations, from leadership to strategic analysis, and it continues to make us stronger and more effective.

While much progress has been made, there are still areas around the world where gender equality is not a reality. Women continue to face barriers in certain professions, in many families, and in numerous regions and countries. It is our collective responsibility to continue advocating for the protection and expansion of women’s rights.

As highlighted in a recent report, 84% of women between the ages of 25 and 54 are now working—an encouraging sign of progress. This statistic exemplifies how women are contributing to every sector and industry, proving time and again that women are capable of excelling in any field. As we continue to work toward a more inclusive and equitable world, it’s clear that the future will require us to rethink old paradigms. In fact, a few years from now, we may need to consider gender quotas in some areas to ensure continued progress and balance.

On this International Women’s Day, we acknowledge that our journey toward true equality is ongoing. At the JALLC, we are committed to learning, growing, and empowering one another to achieve even greater heights. The diversity within our team enhances the quality of our work and allows us to approach complex challenges with new perspectives and innovative solutions.

Let us not forget that men, too, play an essential role in supporting gender equality. This is a shared responsibility, and together, we can create an environment where all individuals—regardless of gender—can contribute and thrive.

As we celebrate the achievements of women worldwide, we also recognize that there is still much to be done. Let’s continue to fight for equal rights, not only within the institutions where we work but across every corner of the globe.

Happy International Women’s Day 2025!
