Colonel (Portuguese Army) Henrique José Pereira dos Santos
Chief of Staff.
Colonel Henrique José Pereira dos Santos was born in Lisbon in 1964. He joined the Portuguese Military Academy in 1981, graduating in 1986 as an Artillery Second Lieutenant. He was promoted to his current rank in 2008.
From 1986-1988 he was Platoon Commander and Instructor at the Portuguese Artillery School, following which he became an Artillery Tactics instructor at the Portuguese Military Academy. After being promoted to Captain, he commanded an Air Defense Battery at the Portuguese Air Defense School, and in 1992, became Military Observer of United Nations Protection Force in the former Yugoslavia. In 1994, he joined the Portuguese Separate Airborne Brigade as Company Commander.
In 1998, after graduating from the Portuguese Staff Course, he was assigned to the Portuguese Army Staff, following which he was posted at the Portuguese Staff College as a Tactics teacher. During this period he was also Angola’s Staff College guest teacher, as well as the Portuguese Army’s representative on the Allied Joint Operations Doctrine Board. During the initial setup of the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps – Spain HQ (2001-2005), he was assigned as G3 Current Operations Section Chief and Operations Centre Director. Later, he was posted in the Portuguese Army Operational Command as Training Branch Section Chief. Following this assignment, he was posted in the national Mechanized Brigade as Chief of Staff. As Colonel, he was assigned to the Portuguese Army Chief of Staff’s Office as Army Commander’s Assistant. From 2009 to 2011, he was the Commander of the Portuguese Artillery School. In 2012 he was the NATO Kosovo Force HQ Assistant Chief of Staff Joint Effects Coordination, after which he was assigned to the Portuguese Military University Institute as Course Director and Military Operations Branch Coordinator. He is currently assigned to NATO's Joint Analysis and Lessons Learned Centre as Chief of Staff.
Among others, he has completed the Portuguese General Officers Promotion Course, the US Air Defense Officer Advanced Course, and the NATO Information Operations Course. He holds a Masters degree in Military Science and has published several articles in military magazines.
He has twelve awards, one citation, and has been decorated with the distinguished services medal (silver), the 1st class military merit medal, the exemplar behaviour medal (silver), three special commission service medals, the NATO Balkans medal, the UN medal serving with UNPROFOR, and the Brazilian Army’s Medal of Pacificador.
