NATO Lessons Learned Staff Officer Course

Effective June 2011, the JALLC took over the Directorship and management of the NATO Lessons Learned Staff Officer Course (NATO LLSOC). The course is facilitated by the Swedish Armed Forces International Centre in Kungsängen near Stockholm, Sweden.


Lecturers and mentors come from both Allied Command Operations and Allied Command Transformation, whilst guest speakers come from a plethora of locations and Nations. A significant portion of the contributors are civilian and military staff from the JALLC. The course is well-balanced between lectures and practical activities, and includes history and background, networking opportunities, and the opportunity to share lessons learned.

Course Purpose

Prepare Lessons Learned Staff Officers (LLSO) to manage and execute an organizationalLessons Learned (LL) process using NATO LL-related processes, training, tools and information sharing in order to develop a LL capability. This course will also impart observation collection, basic analysis techniques, introduction of NATO Lessons Learned Portal (NLLP), handling a LL process in exercises and operations

Target Audience

Personnel posted to LL posts within NATO Commands, and/or member of partner nations.

Learning Objectives

  • Know the LLSO role in gathering and drafting observation using the NATO format; 

  • Employ, review, manage, incorporate, and execute the various phases and steps of the NATO LL Process into the daily cycle of command, staff, and unit activities, intended to improve current and future performance; 

  • Know the key elements of the NATO Lessons Learned Capability, identify any gaps in the implementation of the capability in an organization, and suggest improvements, especially in relation to and in support of the overall NATO LL Process; 

  • Become familiar with the LLSO's responsibilities during analysis and remedial action phase, using suitable analysis methods, techniques and tools;

  • Analyse observation with the goal of discovering the root cause, suggesting conclusions, and supporting decision-making;

  • Describe and identify the handling of Observations in exercises and operations in reference to given Direction & Guidance of the NATO Strategic Command;

  • Understand how the NLLP works in support of handling Observations, data management, and LL sharing.

    Closing date for application 13 January 2020
  • NATO LLSOC20-2: 01-05 June 2019 - Open for application (AppForm 20-2)
    Closing date for application 20 April 2020
  • NATO LLSOC20-3: 21-25 September 2019 - Open for application (AppForm 20-3)
    Closing date for application 10 August 2020

All applicants must have taken the LL online course and obtained the certificate of completion.

Swedint will send the confirmation letter once selected at the end of the process.
